I was knitting away on a sock for Summer of Socks, and glanced out the window. There seemed to be something furry in the tree, and peering more closely revealed that it was a raccoon, settled in for the late afternoon. But then
it seemed like there were more ears and heads than you might expect one raccoon to have
and indeed, it was two: a young mother and kit.
No, we don’t leave pet food outside, and don’t want to actively encourage them to stay. But they are darned cute.

Oh, the raccoon stories I could tell… and they are pretty much all our fault because our non-composting compost pile (wherein we pretend we are composting but pretty much just dump stuff and not do anything else that composting requires >.>) is a delightful buffet for raccoon & opossum alike & so they live cheerfully in the woods behind my house.
Like that time I found a raccoon den in the way backyard with 2 wee baby raccoons in it which filled me with OMGaDORableSquee … a pity the mom had ‘em all moved out by the time I got back there with a camera. :/
There was the male raccoon that for about a week regularly visited the area just below one of my birdfeeders sifting through the discarded shells for intact sunflower seeds.
Yup, they’re reg’lars around here, all right. (Ohyes, I have to tie down the lid to my trash can or deal with a mess!) ;D

Our cutest raccoon incident was from a couple of Christmases ago. It was nighttime, and we had just finished decorating the tree, which is by the sliding glass door that leads to the deck. Glancing outside, we saw that there was a family of raccoons standing up peering in! One youngster was particularly entranced and stayed for a a couple of minutes after the rest had taken off.
